Asteroid Impact
Published in Library Binding by Dial Books for Young Readers (August, 2000)
Authors: Douglas Henderson, Toby Sherry, and Doug Henderson
Average review score:

Scary, creepy, and worth every penny
Okay, so "creepy" and "scary" aren't usually words associated with childrens' books...but let's face it, the mass extinction at the end of the Cretaceous period wasn't exactly nice and tame either...
When I first read this book, it gave me goosebumps...in fact, every time I read through it, it gives me goosebumps...the artwork is simply astounding. Henderson is the best of the best: you ARE there when you are looking at his paintings...and these paintings are nothing less than terrifying in their realism. I highly recomend this book to anyone and everyone. Buy one. Buy tons, because this is the closest you will ever get to experiencing the K/T Impact Event.

ASTEROID IMPACT A SMASH!
Douglas Henderson's newest children's book ASTEROID IMPACT is without doubt the best nonfiction dinosaur book for kids to hit the shelves since, well, Henderson's last book. Lavishly illustrated with 28 breathtaking full-color scenes (including the cover) and 6 color diagrammatic illustrations, the book sets up and depicts the scenario of an asteroid impact and its aftermath at the end of the Cretaceous Period, 65 million years ago.

No one is better than Henderson when it comes to rendering dinosaurs and other Mesozoic denizens in their natural habitats, and this book contains what I consider to be some of his best paleolife work ever. Unsurprisingly, he also shows the same affinity and aptitude for astronomical art, presenting a series of awe-inspiring space scenes that simply boggle the mind with their artistry. He starts the 40-page book with several eye-poppingly beautiful scenes of life in Late Cretaceous North America and its environs just prior to the impact, then begins interspersing them with some of the best space art this side of Chesley Bonestell as he begins showing the asteroid's approach. When the mountain-sized rock finally comes hurtling through Earth's atmosphere and smashes into the ocean near what is now the Yucatán Peninsula, so precisely designed and brilliantly executed are the images that one has the overwhelming impression of viewing an actual documentary film of the event.

The book's text is no less an accomplishment, concise and intelligently written, unlike the (sadly) greater majority of cliché-ridden dinosaur books for children that inhabit bookstore shelves, volumes that impart little of real substance and uncaringly continue to perpetuate outmoded ideas. This is Henderson's second outing as writer/artist (DINOSAUR TREE, published by Bradbury Press in 1994, was his first solo effort) and the time and care taken to ensure that this book is accurate and accessible is evident on every page. At no time does he insult his young audience by "dumbing down" his text, yet another common complaint concerning the current crop of dinosaur books aimed at kids. Henderson presents his data in clear, simple language without sacrificing any of the underlying scientific content. A rare feat, and one to be lauded in an age where science, our one true connection to the real world, is all-too-often relegated to the background or, worse, ignored entirely in favor of mindless "entertainment".

Buy this book. Better yet, buy two. Give one to a child who'll appreciate it and keep the other for yourself.

Blood Scent
Published in Paperback by Justice House Publishing, Inc. (October, 2001)
Author: Patty G. Henderson
Average review score:

A very 'toothsome' erotic vampire romance.
In this highly descriptive, erotic vampire thriller, Patty G. Henderson creates a dynamic tale of soul-mated lovers and a curse that can only be broken to by love.

BLOOD SCENT is set on Bayton Isle, off the coast of Maine, where within the dread stillness of Karnov Mansion, a ritual of blood sustains vampire Lara Karnov until her beloved returns to free her from the evil heritage of her family.

Commissioned to do a landscape painting by the Bayton Isle National Bank, artist Samantha Barnes feels herself drawn to the dark and forbidding Karnov mansion. Soon she becomes obsessed with the long dead and mysterious Lara Karnov whose tragic fate seems to coincide with the nightmares of blood and death that have plagued Samantha since childhood.

Is Samantha the "chosen one" destined to fulfill the Karnov legend and will her love be strong enough to break the terrible curse?

BLOOD SCENT is not a traditional vampire tale. Told from a unique viewpoint, it makes for a wonderful read.

A vampire book that feels like a classic Hammer vampire film
From the first pages of the Prologue, BLOOD SCENT reads like a 70's Hammer Films classic vampire flick. I say that as a compliment. This vampire book will grab you by the neck and not let go until the last bite. Vampire fiction is a genre glutted with cliche characters, but this book dares to be different.

The book takes place on Bayton Isle, a brooding, remote island off the coast of Maine, where the Karnov Family once ruled the land. The Karnov family of vampires is served up as sanguine morsels, but yet remain mysterious. I hope that Henderson will reveal more of this new line of vampires in future books.

Lara Karnov, the black sheep of the Karnov lineage, Samantha Barnes, the eternal hope for Lara's salvation, and Carmen Montoya, hopelessly and dangerously involved with both, are characters richly painted in broad strokes of gothic color. As a matter of fact, although the story takes place in modern times, BLOOD SCENT has the feel of a classic gothic.

BLOOD SCENT is a romance underneath it all, but the pictures you keep after reading this book will stay with you vividly and Lara Karnov is simply an unforgettable new addition to vampire fiction. The ending will surpise. If you want something different in vampires, read BLOOD SCENT.

Boris Vallejo & Julie Bell's Fantasy Calendar 2003
Published in Paperback by Workman Publishing (August, 2002)
Authors: Workman Publishing and C. J. Henderson
Average review score:

A Year for Art
There are calendars and then there are Calendars. The art works by Boris Vallejo and Julie Bell are exceptional. Each month is set out with it's own mythology story and picture. The centre fold is a full length picture. This calendar is a must to own and definitely worth displaying for all you friends and family to admire; so make sure it is the focal point in your home.

mesmerizing but cold
The illustrations are great, is a show of hands. It's a lavish extravagance of color and virtuosism but the human figures appear to be posing very much as if they were ready for a photo session, and that lack of spontaneity. And if you like painting things like that you will find a -what to do guide in those artworks. A wild calendar!

The Condition of the Working Class in England
Published in Paperback by Stanford Univ Pr (June, 1968)
Authors: Friedrich Engels, W. O. Henderson, and W. H. Chaloner
Average review score:

A visit to the Dark Satanic Mills of England
Engels was the engine behind Karl Marx, one that gave him all the support he could, so to permit Marx to dedicate himself almost completely to the completion of his works. Judging himself many degrees bellow Marx in terms of intelect, Engels nonetheless is capable of writting a book such as this which describes all the impoverishment of the working class in the beginning of the industrialization in England, being helped by some well porputed factories labor fiscalization agents who allowed Engels to flip trough their reports. Strong terms like "the dark satanic mills" describe fully what were the working conditions of the time in a so rich country as England. An historical document lest no one forget what can happen again if the free hand of capitalism is allowed to run free of any barriers.

Engels
In this book, Karl Marx's friend and collaborator Friedrich Engels describes the lives of England's laboring classes in the worst days of the industrial revolution. This includes dangerous working conditions, meager pay, child labor and explotation. Being the son of the owner of a textile factory, Engels knew of these conditions first hand. In these days it was said that the fastest way out of Manchester was a bottle of gin. This book contains images that are pathetic in the true sense of word, one catches glimpes of life so wretched that they are scarely belivable. Writings such as this one eventually exposed the misery of the working classes and had a profound influence on socialists and labor movement leaders. The book is a tour-de-force and truly speaks for it's self.

Confessions: How to Write & Sell True Stories
Published in Paperback by Belfry Books (01 August, 2001)
Author: Lorraine Henderson
Average review score:

Essential advice for writers
This book thoroughly explores every detail of writing for the confessions market. The book answers all questions regarding how to go about becoming a sucessful confessions author with sound advice that applies to all genres of writing. Tips from editors are a bonus. This author speaks from the experience of her success. A must for any aspiring writer.

A great resource
Before reading this book, I didn't know anything about the confessions market. But I thought it might be a way to supplement my income while I was writing and trying to sell novels, so I bought a copy.

The book tells you where to find ideas for stories and offers do's and don't's for writing them. It even gives market-specific instructions on how to format and submit your manuscript. In addition, it includes interviews with the editors of the various confession magazines, telling what they like and don't like to see in stories.

What impressed me most about this book was the warm, arm-around-the-shoulder, "you-can-do-this" tone in which it is written. Reading it made me want to try writing a "true" story and believe I really could.

And it worked. I made a quick sale on the very first story I wrote, earning more than enough to make a monthly car payment.

I highly recommend this book to writers who would like to make some extra money from their writing and see their stories in print.

Crimes of Persuasion: Schemes, scams, frauds.
Published in Paperback by Coyote Ridge Publishing (30 November, 2000)
Author: Les Henderson
Average review score:

Very informative book
I have read Mr. Henderson's book and found it to be very informative. My elderly mother was scammed and I wish I had read the book prior to the event to help warn her of the signs that she could have been made aware of. This book would make a great gift to anyone who you would like to inform. I have done a lot of research on the "art of scamming" since this event has taken place, and this book is very good in explaining the different types of scams and how they work. I may add that I am one of those people who never dreamed that "this" could happen in my family......sad to say, it happens more than we even know.

Crimes of Persuasion A Must Read
I recently purchased a copy of "Crimes of Persusion" by Les Henderson. This book is an excellent, comprehensive collection of fraudulant schemes contrived by clever con artists. Having been conned myself by a now defunct housing corporation,General Development, this book had particular appeal. The short, easy to read sections with catchy titles highlight hundreds of scams. Whether it be pyramid schemes, poetry contests, cruiseline specials etc..., I think readers will be surprised at how many times they, themselves, have actually been deceived. I know I was. Also, I discovered a cruise line scam that a close friend of mine had just fallen victim to. The author's description of the actual scam was almost verbatim to the phone call she had received. To avoid becoming an innocent victim of some smooth-talking con artist, make "Crimes of Persusion" a must read for 2001.

Dawn of the Dinosaurs: The Triassic in Petrified Forest
Published in Paperback by PFMA (December, 2000)
Authors: Robert A. Long, Rose Houk, Doug Henderson, and Treasure Chest Books
Average review score:

A beautifully-illustrated and clearly-written book. Bravo!
220 million years ago, Arizona was near the equator. The trees that became the Petrified Forest grew on a broad, humid floodplain with lakes and swamps, somewhat like today's Amazon basin, or a more tropical Louisiana. Most of the trees that were petrified were araucaria conifers, related to present-day Norfolk Island pines. Swimming in these waters were prong-toothed sharks and thorny-snouted fish. Giant carnivorous metoposaurs lurked in the muddy swamp bottoms, while great crocodilian phytosaurs hunted the first true dinosaurs on dryer land.

Doug Henderson's moody, atmospheric paintings bring these scenes to life. Robert Long, formerly park paleontologist at Petrified Forest, assures scientific accuracy. Veteran natural-history writer Rose Houk brings polish to the text. McQuiston, as usual, provides an elegant book design. This is a beautiful book. It would be a fine companion for (or memento of) a visit to the Petrified Forest, and a nice gift for a dino-lover. Highly recommended.

An outstanding synthesis of art and paleontology.
I recommend this book without hesitation for anyone with an interest in paleontology. It provides a balanced view of all forms of life evident at the Petrified Forest National Monument during the Late Triassic, from fish and invertebrates to plants large and small and on up to the most gruesome ruling reptiles and amphibians.

The text is accurate and precise without ever obtrusively presenting theory as fact. This book will age well as future discoveries further refine or reshape our view of the world at that time.

The pencil (charcoal?) and pastel drawings are scientific illustration at its best, with just enough art and dynamic enhancement to make you feel like you really are skipping nimbly around 20 foot phytosaurs, or swimming with freshwater sharks through prehistoric logjams. Each full page drawing is explained by a facing page. Scale and perspective change early and often, leaving you eager to turn the page for the next visual diorama.

The layout is clean and visually elegant, the text easy on the eyes, and the illustrations are easily seen in light from any angle against the high quality semigloss paper.

I have had this book for ten years now, and I still frequently pick it up and let myself drift backwards in time with it until I am rocking gently in warm clear waters in a far prehistoric time. This is truly a first class publication by the Petrified Forest Museum Association. The authors and Museum Association are to be commended!

Excellent book for a senior to graduate level geometry book
I used this book for a graduate level geometry class, and I found this book to be very enjoyable in terms of thinking that it requires and the way that the author presents the material. I like Henderson's approach to geometry, and I would recommend this book for math majors in college.

Forgiveness: Breaking the Chain of Hate
Published in Paperback by Bookpartners Inc. (01 March, 2002)
Author: Michael Henderson
Average review score:

Forgiveness: Breaking the Chain of Hate
In this time of imminent war and global frustration, nothing seems to be more poignant than the act of forgiving. In this book, the author tells stories about country-to-country forgiveness, religion-to-religion, etc. I believe if more people read this book and actually acted on what they read, we would be able to solve global and local issues with love and consideration, rather then act on anger impulses. If you are concerned with the way your world is reacting, you should purchase this book and use it in your daily works.

Forgiveness, Breaking the Chain of Hate
I was inspired by Michael Henderson's FORGIVENESS, Breaking the Chain of Hate, the first time I read it early in the year of 2001. After the September 11th terrorist acts, this book seemed particularly poignant.
I was intrigued recently to find that there is a new updated version of the original book, with a new foreword by Gandhi's grandson. His observation of the timeliness and the importance of this work is keen. FORGIVENESS, Breaking the Chain of Hate is an inspired work.
Everyone should read this book to help cope with the aftermath of September 11th.
